Michael Jackson 1958-2009

I still can’t believe he is gone. This guy’s a legend and an icon in the pop music industry. Nobody can beat him. Not even Justin Timberlake nor any of those new comers …. He reminds me of Elvis. Elvis passed away at 42 and Michael at 50. Way too  young for all these exceptional music legend.

He’ll be greatly missed. Rest in peace Michael. You will be remembered and we will teach our children about your songs.

It’s a legacy he’s leaving behind. He’ll always be loved!

TamaWalkie by Bandai

Today I bought a Tamawalkie for my boy. This TamaWalkie is to keep him company in the plane on our way back.

Pix taken with my Sony Ericsson C902

Well, he has been pestering me for a few days to bring him to Toys R Us. Which I never did LOL … cuz too lazy to drive all the way to Mid Valley. But today I needed to get a pair of Crocs, so I decided to take him to Toys R Us while mom and little boy went to Jusco. Anyway, didnt manage to get the Crocs because the Crocs store didnt have what I liked.

We made three full rounds around Toys R Us – hoping to find Disney Cars for him. Unfortunately, their collection of Disney Cars was rather limited. Besides, he didnt find what he liked. He wanted me to get those HUGE Thomas and Friends train sets for him. They are really affordable but I just cant carry them back to Finland. So, during the third round, I spotted Tamagotchi. Actually, I’m clueless of what to do with a Tamagotchi despite the fact I almost got myself one 2 years ago while shoppin at Toys R Us in TaiKoo Hong Kong. Anyway, I went ahead to get the TamaWalkie for my boy as it’s for 4 years and up! There were 3 colors – Black, Green and Blue. Being a boy … he chose blue. Nope, I wasnt surprised. This boy is like his dad =S … I tried to convince him to get the green one but he insisted “Blue one Mama. I like.” Kewl … FINE! I closed the deal.

What is TamaWalkie?

Story
The story of this one is that the Tamagotchis are busy preparing for the Tama and Earth Expo. One day, a Tamagotchi went to Earth on errands for collecting the materials of the American pavilion, but due to a collision, the UFO carrying the Tamagotchi was destroyed. To finish the errands, he will need assistance from the Tamagotchis in America, collecting the UFO parts along the way.

Malaysian orangutan hospital sparks controversy

Really got nothing to do … what kinda controversy is that??? People here are trying to save those orangutans … so shut the fucc up!

A Malaysian orangutan sanctuary where baby apes wear nappies, sleep in cots and are cared for by nurses dressed in masks and starched uniforms has drawn the wrath of environmentalists.

At Orangutan Island in Malaysia’s north, tourists snap photos as they file past large windows looking onto a facility billed as the world’s only rehabilitation and preservation facility for the endangered primates.

Behind the glass, adorable baby orangutans like two-month-old Tuah lie swaddled in nursery sheets and cling to baby rattles.

“He is separated from the mother because his hands got entangled in the mother’s hair and was unable to breastfeed,” says the facility’s chief veterinarian D. Sabapathy.

Tuah lies calmly in his cot with his eyes wide open and hands across his chest, hooked up to cables monitoring his heart beat and oxygen levels, ignoring the passing parade.

But the care lavished on the animals, which are fed every two hours by a staff of seven nurses on duty round the clock, is lost on environmentalists who say this is no way to treat wild animals facing the threat of extinction.

Managers of the 35-acre island, which is part of a resort hotel development, say they aim to return the animals to their natural jungle habitat, but so far none have been released.

“It is ridiculous to have orangutans in nappies and hand-raised in a nursery. How are they going to reintroduce the primates back in the wild,” said senior wildlife veterinarian Roy Sirimanne.

Sirimanne, who has worked in zoos in Southeast Asia and the Middle East over the past four decades, said baby orangutans need to be with their mothers to learn survival skills.

“First, we need to save their habitat which is quickly disappearing. And it is the mother that will teach its young for the first four years or more on what to eat and how to look for food,” he told AFP.

“Keeping the orangutans in captivity on an island is not a conservation programme. It amounts to desecration (of the species) as it is nearly impossible to reintroduce them back to the forest.”

Experts say there are about 50,000 to 60,000 orangutans left in the wild, 80 percent of them in Indonesia and the rest in Malaysia’s eastern states of Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo island.

But Orangutan Island is situated in the north of peninsular Malaysia, far from the jungles of Borneo where the orangutan’s natural habitat is being lost to logging and palm oil plantations.

A 2007 assessment by the United Nations Environment Programme warned that orangutans will be virtually eliminated in the wild within two decades if current deforestation trends continue.

The Malaysian branch of conservation group Friends of the Earth said the best way to save the orangutan is to address rampant poaching and shrinking habitats.

“We are opposed to the orangutan sanctuary. We are opposed to this theme park resort having wildlife in captivity,” said its president Mohamad Idris.

“Captive-bred orangutans have no natural resistance against diseases, making them susceptible to diseases. Death is inevitable,” he said.

The centre’s veterinarian defended the facility, situated in the tourist town of Bukit Merah, which opened in 2000 and now houses 25 orangutans.

He admitted the centre had suffered a high mortality rate in its early days, with seven deaths of infant orangutans between 2000 and 2003, but said it had learned a lot since then.

“It is the pride of Malaysians and it is aimed at helping ensure our orangutans do not become extinct,” said Sabapathy.

He said the facility was originally stocked with orangutans obtained from the forestry department in Sarawak state on Borneo, who had been confiscated from individuals there.

“Now we can study the primate and collect data. The orangutans will eventually be returned to Sarawak. That is our objective,” he said.

Sabapathy said infants were only removed from their mothers if they were underweight, neglected and at risk of dying, and that some mothers raised their own babies, including one born in May.

“I will not be disheartened by the criticism,” he said. “We are not ill-treating them. People say the species is getting endangered but what are they doing? We are trying to increase the numbers in the wild.”

Nearby, 21-year-old nurse Nadiah Mohamad smiled fondly at one-year-old April who was rejected by his mother, and fed him with formula while four-month-old June showed off by jumping around her cot and pulling the bedsheets.

“I love them. It is like taking care of a small child,” she said.

When the baby apes are a year old, they are transferred to an “infant development unit” designed to teach them to live in the wild.

In another zone, enclosed with electrified barbed wire, adult orangutans are free to roam and build their nests in the treetops.

Most of the visitors, from Malaysia and abroad, are delighted to interact with the animals and are unaware of the criticism.

“I don’t think it is wrong keeping them here. It is a practical solution to save the orangutans and educate our children,” said 26-year-old Vikki Kendrick from Britain.

Happy Bak Chang Festival – Duan Wu Jie

Happy Bak Chang Festival (Duan Wu Jie) for those who celebrates this auspicious day for the Chinese.

Here’s a brief story of Duan Wu Jie:

Duan Wu Jie is a widely celebrated festival amongst the Chinese, to pay respect to the patriotic poet, Qu Yuan (pronounced as Chue Yuan). The legend involves a really long and complicated throne-fighting war and political history. But to make a long story short: Qu Yuan was an important minister back in Chu Kingdom in ancient China. He had been known for his loyalty for the emperor of Chu, and loved his country greatly. However, His Majesty had not taken Qu Yuan’s advice seriously, and he eventually got himself trapped and captured in a foreign land by his enemies, which then lead to his own death.

Sad and angry at the corrupted, dying Kingdom, Qu Yuan tied himself to a big rock and threw himself into the River of Puo Luo. The people then made rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves and threw them into the river. They believed this would stop the fish from eating Qu Yuan’s body. Some would even row down stream in a boat, beating drums and shouting out loud in the hope to scare the fish away (it was believed that it is how the Dragon Boat event is related to the festival.

Since then, the 5th day of the 5th month in the Chinese calendar has been set as Duan Wu Festival to remember the incident. Although there were versions of legends and stories that indicate Duan Wu has existed way before Qu Yuan’s death, the tradition still carries on.

The rice dumplings (ZongZi) are glutinous rice (or sticky rice in some countries like Thailand and Hong Kong) wrapped in bamboo leaves, or other large leaves (lotus is one of the more commonly used leaves). You can find all sorts of different fillings in the rice: pork, roast pork, chestnut, egg, salted egg, mushroom, red bean, or just simply without filling. They could be just white rice dumpling (not pre-fried), or brown (pre-fried with soya sauce).

Nowadays, you can buy Zongzi almost everyday of the year, in restaurants or hawker stores in most oriental countries such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore, and other Asian countries where large amount of Chinese reside.

I am so happy cuz I’m celebrating this at home with my family in Malaysia. Most of the time, I would either go to the oriental store to buy frozen ones or pre-order from some Malaysian restaurants in Helsinki. One restaurant that I know in Helsinki that sells these yummylicious bak chang (glutinous rice dumplings) is Singapore Restaurant. I remember in 2004 they charged me 3.50euro each and I ordered 10 of them. Will take more pix and update this blog post.

Stay tuned.

PriceWatch Malaysia

The Star Online
26 May 2009

PUTRAJAYA: Shoppers trying to be thrifty should refer to price watch website http://pricewatch.kpdnhep.gov.my.

The portal provides price information on 50 types of goods sold in various outlets.

It is part of the Government’s efforts to educate Malaysian consumers on their rights and good consumer practices.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said a 1,600-strong price monitor team would key into the system prices of goods sold at hypermarkets, supermarkets and wet markets nationwide so that the public would know which outlets offer the best prices.

“We believe this is a good way to initiate healthy competition among retailers to offer goods at reasonable prices,” he told reporters after launching the portal.

Ismail Sabri said the ministry would later expand the price watch to districts and rural areas, apart from providing price information through other means such as fixed lines and handphones.

The minister said that another portal – www.smartconsumer.my – is for consumers to share ideas and views, experiences and thoughts on issues affecting them.

It has, among others, a chat forum, a blog, a section to share tips and information and a “know your product” section.

“In this internet age, we believe this is a good way to get the public to participate in activities that affects them as consumers.

“This is also an effective way for the ministry to obtain views and feedback on consumer issues,” he said.

Be a smart consumer. Check for best prices.

Well I just went to the website to check, there’s no info yet. Hopefully it’ll be up soon. How is that possible that the website isn’t ready and they have already advertised it. Weird.
