I do not fancy going around a country that I visit without renting a car. I find it inconvenient to travel around by public transportation because there are so much of limitations as compared to having your own car. At least, with a rented car, I can go anywhere and at anytime I wish. I do not have to confine myself to time restrictions nor missing any spectacular places of interest. Besides, most car rental companies nowadays offer great packages and discounts from minimum 3 days car rental onwards. Most of the time, we will rent a car for one week vacation. With that we can have unlimited travel.

Before Pompeii, we went for a hike up the notorious Mount Vesuvius. It cost €6 per person. We were each given a pair of walking sticks and were advised to bring a bottle of water in case we got thirsty half way up. Its 4,100-foot silhouette is visible from nearly every part of the Naples coastline. At night, the lights from homes and cars sparkle almost halfway up the mountain’s sloping sides. This huge volcano always remind the inhabitants of Naples of its infamous eruptions, especially the eruption of 79 A. D., which buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Oh yeah, in the evenings, you can see cars park by the slopes with newspapers covering the windows and windscreen. Can you guess what’s going on inside? I’ll leave that to your imagination.

We visited Rome in 2003 and we traveled down south to Naples, fondly known as Napoli by the Romans. We drove to Pompeii, Herculaneum (Twin city which was also buried by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius), and Mount Vesuvius. It was a scenic drive all the way from Rome to the south. Lots of uphill and downhill driving. Exhilarating! Italians are crazy drivers. These monstrous daredevils drove like there’s no speed limit. My hubby was smart, he let me drive at night. *!@#%&?&* Especially in Rome, they don’t give a damn to pedestrian crossings. It was in 2002, we saw a guy fell off his scooter because of avoiding a girl who didn’t see him coming. These motorcyclists could slow down but they didn’t because they thought it’s mandatory for pedestrians to stop and watch out for them. So, he deserved it. I actually applauded. Also congratulated him and wished he fell harder.
