KUALA LUMPUR: The Mathematics and Science subjects in the UPSR examination will continue to be set in dual languages.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said there would be no change to the language issue.

“We will continue with what we are doing,” he said in his speech at the 50th Merdeka Anniversary Cultural and Arts Performance at Bukit Jalil National Stadium here last night.

Abdullah said MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting had raised the issue and asked what the next step was.

Earlier, Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein was reported as saying that the final decision would be made next year on whether to use English as the sole language for the two subjects in the UPSR.

Ong said that with Abdullah’s announcement, the system that had been used the last five years would continue.

Pupils will still be allowed to choose the language they prefer for the two subjects in the examination.

In the last five years, almost all pupils from the Chinese vernacular schools opted to use the Chinese language in the examination, Ong said.

Now, the Chinese need no longer to worry about this, he said.

“This is good news,” said Ong, who thanked Abdullah and Hishammuddin, adding that they were open-minded.
